On the way home from office, I heard NPR's reporting on Judge Sotomayor's hearing in front of the Senate
Judiciary Committee. Two controversial remarks she made in the past seemed coming back to hunt her. She
conceded that she made a bad play on words in saying that a "wise Latina woman" could reach a better
conclusion than a white man.
With respect to her second controversial statement, "policy is made [and] where ... the law is percolating,"
she said that her words have been taken out of context. She said that I wasn't talking about the policy
reflected in the law that Congress makes." rather, merely focusing on the fact that appellate judges establish
precedent. They decide what the law means in certain circumstances, and those decisions "can be binding,"
--- sure, every law school kid knows this.
Lesson to be learned, be careful what you have to say to public, especialy if you know you may be nominated
for Supreme Court Justice. I am just kidding. |
