| Because we believe that organic food is grown by farmers who wear overalls, drive tractors, and don’t use pesticides. In spite of the fact that most organic food is made by major agribusiness, which just uses it as an excuse to jack up price. Many of us consider shopping at Whole Foods to be a religious experience which allows us to feel good about our consumptions; with the use of paper bags and biodegradable packaging; and the opportunities to see some very well dressed ladies there. Honestly I can not tell the difference between non-organic and organic fruits and vegetables even though some non-organic fruits and vegetables that carry the heaviest pesticide. But certain fruits and vegetables are probably not worth the premium such as organic bananas cost 78 cents a pound, 30 cents more than regular bananas. But there's almost no health benefit to buying organic in this case. My hubby often laughs at me when I force him to eat organic food. He thinks I lose my mind for organic anything. He once remarked: “It’s almost guaranteed that if some Columbian drug lord can start offering ‘organic’ cocaine, he’ll be the richest guy ever”. But no one can disagree that Whole food has wisely discovered that making people feel good about buying stuff there is outrageously profitable. |
