Things for Your Bucket List: Kopi Luwak
The term “Bucket list coffee” refers to the coffee mentioned in the famous movie “The Bucket List”. This coffee is better known as Kopi Luwak, which makes many appearances throughout the movie in numerous different scenes.
The Bucket List is a movie which was released in 2007. The actors in the lead roles are Jack Nicholson as Edward and Morgan Freeman as Carter.
The millionaire Edward Cole, and Carter Chambers, a mechanic, became friends because they were both cancer patients and put in the same room. Indeed, Edward Cole was the owner of the Hospital they were in.
The two elders did not have anything in common except for their cancer. They knew that by comforting each other that they could make a difference to each other’s life. .
When Carter told Edward about the bucket list he had created, they decided to add other activities, leave their worries behind, and fulfill their personal desires through the activities on their Bucket List. These included:
Witness something truly majestic
Help a complete stranger
Laugh until I cry
Drive a Shelby Mustang

Get a tattoo
Skydiving
Visit Stonehenge
Drive a motorcycle on the Great Wall of China
Go on a Safari

Luckily, Edward is wealthy, so they were able to actively pursue the activities in their list. Following the bucket list led to them becoming good friends and finding joy in their old age, despite the ever bearing cancer.
Bucket List Movie Coffee: Kopi Luwak
The first mention of Kopi Luwak in the bucket list movie is at a board meeting, where they are waiting for a proposal by Mister Cole. The picture below
Edward drinks Kopi Luwak a couple of times during the movie and his favorite way of brewing it is with a Syphon – which can be seen multiple times in the movie. A Syphon is a device, which brews coffee with the help of heat and a Vacuum. For more information about what a Syphon is, please visit this page of our site.
The Syphon used in the movie, is a Royal Demitasse Coffee Service. Some people consider this the most elegant coffee maker. To find out more about this coffee, please visit this page.
Hilariously, and despite being a ‘connoisseur’, Edward does not know how the coffee is produced. That is until Carter hands him a note explaining the process on his deathbed. The note stated: “Kopi Luwak is the world’s most expensive coffee. Though for some, it falls under the category of “too good to be true.” In the Sumatran village, where the beans are grown, lives a breed of wild tree cat. These cats eat the beans, digest them and then…. defecate.”
Edward and Carter have a good laugh about the procedures of making Kopi Luwak and crossed out “Laugh until I cry” from the list.
Is Kopi Luwak on your bucket list? Here is some further information about how this coffee is produced here by Kopi Luwak Direct.
Wild Civet Coffee is collected in forests where Civet Cats roam around freely and naturally eat coffee cherries for their sweet fruit flesh. Once eaten, the coffee beans pass through the digestive system of the civets. Then digestive processes involving proteolytic enzymes break down proteins found in the coffee beans.
This process removes bitterness from the coffee beans and makes the coffee taste exceptionally smooth.
After the digestive processing by the civets, the coffee beans are carefully cleaned and dehulled; which removes the layer coming into contact with the Civets. Next the coffee is sorted for quality, so that only the best beans get delivered to our customers. After the sorting process, we roast the coffee with a medium roast to bring out the unique aroma of our coffee, before shipping it off to our customers
