518.“The poet, he nothing affirmeth, and therefore never lieth”

“The poet, he nothing affirmeth, and therefore never lieth” is a quote from Sir Philip Sidney's Defense of Poesie. Sidney wrote this in response to Plato's critique of poets in The Republic, where Plato accused poets of telling lies. Sidney's quote means that poets do not lie because they do not affirm that their work is true.
Sidney believed that poetry is a superior form of communication and that its value depends on what it communicates. He believed that poetry is an art of imitation that is used to teach and delight. Sidney also believed that even history can be poetic when it is described in a passionate and lively way.
