A leitmotif is a repeating musical phrase that represents a character, setting, emotion, or theme. The term comes from the German words "leit" and "motif", which mean "leading" and "motive". Leitmotifs were popularized by German composer Richard Wagner in the 19th and 20th centuries. They were often used in opera to accompany a character or theme when they appeared on stage. In film music, a leitmotif can be a succession of notes, harmonic progressions, or rhythmic patterns. Some famous examples of leitmotifs in film scores include the main theme and "Imperial March" from John Williams's Star Wars score.
