Getting old, wanted to do something for homeland/hometown

OK, it is now 21 years since I left China for graduate education in US. Although I have been back visiting every one or two years lately, I always went as a tourist. Now I am getting older day by day and the desire to do something for my homeland/hometown grows stronger. To my pleasant surprise, I found that 盐城师范学院 has a new Department of 统计 (there are not many such departments in China to my knowledge) and faculty in this area is listed as a priority in recruitment. I have no plan to be a full time sea-turtle. But I do have one month of vacation each year that I may put in good use. A potential way is to become a visiting professor in the summer, teaching one or two courses or doing some workshop. For me personally, working in 盐城 will give me an opportunity to re-connect with many old friends, providing some kind of closure for the friendship.

Many on this forum are much more experienced in this and I would appreciate your input on pros and cons and the best ways to get things going.

Just returned to this forum and caught your reply. 华人统计会议, you mean the International Chinese Statistical meeting? I went to the latest one in San Francisco this summer.

ur best way is to KNOW someone there in the dept. otherwise, you send in your material and off it goes to the trash bin...guanxi is the new English word, but you should know.

I am working at a place now for 1 month each year. they simply pay my flight, hotel and food.  email me if you need more details.   now I am not so sure after the 11 year sentence of Mr. Liu.

Good point. I think I can be useful in two ways. 1. I can teach one or two advanced courses in the hosting college for a national audience . 2. Can help in getting some papers published.

我觉得假期回去，帮他们办个这方面的讲座挺好的。如果校方的广告做的好，应当会有收益的。小站的八十一子，炉匠，关中。。。都应当有这方面的经验。

我们学校没有每年的寒暑假，所以没有那么多可支配时间。

我一般每次回国前会和国内人先联系，安排一些讲座什么的。因为我们讲的东西比较新，还是很受欢迎的。我的专业比较新，很想写本书把这边的系统介绍过去，就是每天太忙了。。。

我觉得我们现在各方面都比较稳定，应该有能力为那边做点什么。羡慕你们的寒暑假。:)

strange...got this email on 29th of Dec and the deadline? 29th of Dec! (and the time in China is 13 hrs ahead of here...)...this is very typical there. I did not know my alma mater was even qualified for a 千人计划....it used to be you have to be a 985 or 211 school to get a quota...maybe they changed it now?

alsorun, you can try this one too, if you can take 3 months off each year...some say it has to be 6 months min for this program.

根据省委组织部《关于转发<关于开展2010年“千人计划”申报工作的通知>的通知》（湘组〔2009〕111号）精神，现就开展我校2010年国家引进海外高层次人才“千人计划”申报工作通知如下：

一、“千人计划”类型、申报条件及申报材料要求等详见中组部办公厅《关于开展2010年“千人计划”申报工作的通知》（附件1）。

二、2010年“千人计划”申报工作将于2010年1月、5月和9月分三批进行，材料上报省委组织部人才工作处的时间分别是2010年1月4日、4月30日、9月1日前。

Your idea of writing a book for the Chinese audience is a great one. You can invite one or two coauthors if your time is tight. It does not have to be the best in the world, just the best in China. Good luck!

I do not think I am up to the level or challenge of "thousand people plan". I do not want to put myself inside a high-pressure cooker either. In addition, my appointment here is 11 months (remember the director title?).

Do you want to give "thousand people" a try? Your area has more direct use in China and may click.

maybe after my 2nd one graduates from college, then I might consider it.  I am not sure if I need 10 mill though to start a lab...i may opt for a small place to be quiet and do some science...

Why do you have to wait for her (2nd daughter) to graduate from college? Should be ok once she enters college.

want her to have a place to stay during her break...i.e. Christmas and New Year.  Maybe it is not really necessary? she can fly to China for that. but a bit more expensive...

the main consideration is political atmosphere.  
maybe when I am almost ready to retire, it will matter less?

after 4 years I will be 52, still qualify for qianren plan (right now 55 is the age limit).

I will get 1800 a month when I am 55 (retirement from another place, best deal), enough to live in a remote place in China even without a salary -- but i need to pay 10k in a few days for that plan to work (need 8 years but had only 7.5, need to pay services which I qualify since I did work there for 8.5 years but did not pay to the plan the first year).

2：杰出人才（40名）
招聘条件：
①博士学位，原则上不超过45岁，特别优秀人才年龄可适当放宽；
②在国外连续4年以上从事科研工作并获得副教授及以上或相应职位，或在国内获得教授或相应职位的人才；并在国内外学术界有一定影响，做出过具有国际水平的研究成果，能带领一支队伍在国际科学前沿从事研究并做出具有国际水平的创新成果；
③或掌握关键技术、拥有重大发明专利，或具有较高的技术或工艺开发、设计能力和实践经验，或具有成功创办高新技术企业经历和业绩的人才；或具有成功创办高新技术企业经历和业绩的人才；并能带领团队负责示范工程或大型实验平台的设计、建造以及运行等（对于工程技术类人才，特别优秀者工作年限、年龄、学位、技术职称可适当放宽）。

3：骨干人才（60名）
招聘条件：
博士学位（工程类人员具有硕士及以上学位），原则上不超过45岁，具有5年以上相关工作经验或1年以上副高级专业技术职务任职经历，在国内外相关领域有一定影响。

4：青年人才（50名）
招聘条件：
博士学位（工程类人员具有硕士及以上学位），年龄不超过35岁，具有3年以上相关工作经验或2年以上中级专业技术职务任职的经历。

四、岗位待遇：
科研启动经费支持:
1、领衔人才科研启动经费，不少于200万。
2、杰出人才科研启动经费100万元，因科研工作需要，可另外申请。
3、骨干人才科研启动经费50万元。

薪   资 ：
1、工资+绩效奖金；
2、或协议年薪：
①领衔人才：50-80万/年。
②杰出人才：35-50万/年。
