(Masochism):

(Sadomasochism):

In Proust’s In Search of Lost Time, using pain, suffering, and emotional cruelty—what could broadly be described as "torment" or "masochism/sadism"—is not just a recurring theme in how his characters experience love; it is the fundamental mechanics of love itself.
In Proust’s literary universe, tranquility and comfortable possession signal the death of love. Love is only fully realized, felt, and sustained through an agonizing prick of anxiety.
1. Anxiety and Absence: The Ignition of Desire
Proustian love is never born from mutual understanding or warm companionship; it is ignited by uncertainty, coldness, and the threat of loss.
• Swann and Odette: Charles Swann is initially indifferent to Odette—she isn't even his physical type. It is only when she becomes elusive, lies, and withholding that the sharp pang of suspicion transforms his mild affection into a consuming, torturous love.
• Marcel and Albertine: When Albertine is readily available in Marcel's apartment, he grows bored and indifferent. The second he senses her inner world is out of his reach—or when she suddenly leaves—his passion reignites into a frantic state of obsession.

Proust's Core Premise: We rarely love a person for who they truly are. We love the agonizing mystery they present, and the vivid, painful imagination that mystery forces us to cultivate.

2. Jealousy and Imprisonment: The Impossibility of Possession
Love in Proust is inherently invasive and self-inflicted (masochistic):
• Jealousy as Love’s Proof: In The Captive (La Prisonnière), Marcel keeps Albertine virtually imprisoned in his home to neutralize his jealousy. Yet, because he cannot possess her internal thoughts and memories, his containment strategy turns inward, subjecting himself to endless mental torment.
• The Absolute Solitude of the Individual: Because two human souls can never truly merge, emotional friction—causing pain or enduring pain—becomes the most potent, visceral way to feel connected to another person.
3. Explicit Sadomasochism and Psychological Transgression
Beyond psychological anguish, Proust explicitly weaves literal sadomasochistic motifs throughout the novel:
• The Montjouvain Scene: Mlle Vinteuil and her friend engage in explicit lesbian sadomasochism, defiling the photograph of her late father before lovemaking. Proust uses this to show how desecrating something sacred is a desperate, intense attempt to feel the weight of moral and emotional reality.
• Baron de Charlus: Late in the novel, the aristocratic Baron de Charlus is discovered in a secret male brothel, chained to a bed and beaten with iron-spiked whips. For Charlus, physical subjugation acts as a dramatic catharsis for his deep social isolation and forbidden desires.
Conclusion
For Proust, happiness is static and unreflective; only suffering forces us to pay attention, rendering us conscious of our desires and existence.
He isn't necessarily advocating for toxic relationships as a lifestyle choice, but rather diagnosing a bleak human condition: love is a chronic illness fueled by jealousy and the fear of the unpossessable—and emotional torment is simply its fever.
