My desktop doesn't finish booting

I have a HP Proliant series, about 5 years old. My monitor is a 19" ViewSonic LCD screen bought at the same time.
I have 3 hard drives, one factory installed, one a smaller one for pic, one large Seagate disk for media storage.
Lately I have experienced the windows picture manager hang trying to open a photo on the smaller disk, and having to reboot a few times.
Within the past week I have this not finishing boot issue, I saw the XP logo but never get to see the login screen. I lost my resolution setting somehow as well, I get this popup saying 1200x1080 is the best resolution.
I also hear the click sound upon initial power on.
What gives?

先看看能不能boot到safety mode。safety mode的Video要求比较低。把video设置降下来以后，能不能登录？

另外，既然不出现登录屏幕，这个信息怎么出来的？

I think you are right, husband thinks it is video related as well. The system booted but just not displaying.
The popup came up after the XP boot screen.
It actually allowed me to log in after 1 hour but still busy and not working.
May have to reinstall the OS.

Actually it is still installing the OS, stuck at Registering components. Originally I thought it was finished but no, it is taking a long time to do anything with the installation. Now I am suspecting the hard drive or viruses.

Like 风雨 said, disconnect 2 add-on hdd, then install OS. If hdd is bad , buy a new one. I bought a new 320GB for $50, pretty cheap.

You are right, the disk with the pics is malfunctioning. My other 2 disks are OK. However it still puzzles me as to why reinstalling OS on the onboard disk would hang since it is still functioning fine.

This happened to my Dell Poweredge 400sc after 4 yrs of use.
It turned out that some capacitors on the motherboard were blown. I took them out and soldered some new ones on and it worked.

Look at the caps around the CPU. They are tall and cylindrical-shaped. There is an X mark pressed on the top of the component; this is for allowing the cap to break and drain slowly when it gets too hot inside. If you see leaks or you see the top bulges on the "X", the cap is bad.

If this is not the problem, it could be that the power supply can no longer support (being too old?) the current the system is drawing. In this case, take off everything, the extra hard drives, the old modem, the sound card, etc, and try the bare minimum system and see if it works.

We took out the bad drive and the system is functioning fine. In the meantime I upgraded to XP Professional and just finished installing all the drivers. The husband said he backed up the pics. So that is good news.
