Enjoy free admission to the UC Botanical Garden on the first Thursday of the month. Parking is limited. Docent-led tours for groups are not available on Free Thursdays. In order to minimize the impact on the plant collection, ensure the safety of visitors, and to provide your group with the best educational experience we do not admit groups larger than 18 students (+3 chaperones) on our "First Free Thursdays." Free Intel Museum class lets kids explore the science of UV - 08/01/2013 10:00 AM
The Intel Museum, Santa Clara
Twoclass times: 10-11am, 3-4pm
Computer chips are everywhere--powering the Internet, controlling cars, automating factories, enhancing cell phones, and enriching home entertainment. A favorite class at the Intel Museum helps children ages 7 and up explore the science of UV and learn about semiconductor fabrication.
The class lasts about 45 minutes. Space is limited and reservations are required. Reservation deadline is 48 hrs prior to the class date.
An adult who remains in the museum throughout the class must accompany all participants.

Meet with music ethnologist, musician, instrument maker, and educator Michael Bradke for a hands-on, earson, full-body exploration of musical cultures from every continent. A longtime friend of the Exploratorium, Bradke is the founder of the Mobile Music Museum based in D�sseldorf, Germany, and a 2013 Osher Fellow.

ASP's Project ASTRO partners Teachers with Astronomers in Bay Area Schools & Community Organizations
Two Day event�(attendance on both days is required)
Project ASTRO is looking for 3rd to 9th grade teachers and volunteer astronomers to work together in sharing the wonders of astronomy with students. Together, teachers and their astronomer partner attend a free 2-day summer workshop to learn hands-on, inquiry-based astronomy activities designed to involve students in the excitement of scientific discovery.

Field Botany Fridays - 08/02/2013 10:00 AM
Mayacamas Mountains Sanctuary, Geyserville
Come hike with ACR staff. While we hike, we may identify plants, survey for rare plants, photograph wildflowers, discuss ethnobotany or other trailside botany. Takes place the first Friday of every month.
Please dress for the weather and bring at least one quart of drinking water. You may also wish to bring a hat, an extra layer, and a snack. There are no toilets, no water fountains, no restaurants, no trash collection...this is a primitive and wild place! Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the outing. For hikes you will want shoes that protect your toes and give you good traction on uneven ground, such as sneakers or hiking boots. Please leave your pets at home.
These hikes are hosted by Audubon Canyon Ranch staff. No preregistration is necessary, and all hikes are free.

Exploratorium Presents Geometry, Trash, Space and More at Saturday Cinema : Geometry in Motion - 08/03/2013 12:00 PM

The Exploratorium's innovative Cinema Arts program presents a series of short films, animations, and abstract works to engage all curious movie lovers every Saturday, beginning August 3, 2013, in the museum's Kanbar Forum. Films vary from week to week, and encompass museum gallery themes and investigations of natural phenomena. All screenings are included with museum admission.
Saturday Cinema: Geometry in Motion in the Kanbar Forum Three showings: 12pm, 2pm, 4pm
A moving lens is put on kaleidoscopic transformations, dancing patterns, dramatic narratives, and hypnotic shifts in space in this screening that features a range of animations and hand-crafted masterpieces exploring the limitless potential of geometry. Films include Rectangle and Rectangle (Rene Jodoin, 1984) and Papermation (Jen Stark, 2005).

Science Saturday:A Damsel in Distress - The SF Forktail Damselfly - 08/03/2013 01:00 PM

John Hafernik is Professor of Biology at San Francisco State University, President of the California Academy of Sciences and Director of the ZomBee Watch Citizen Science Project. He specializes in the ecology and evolutionary biology of insect and their kin. In recent years, he and his students have conducted surveys of bees, beetles, butterflies, spiders and other arthropods in the Presidio.
Dr. Hafernik has studied the rare San Francisco Damselfly since the 1970s. He will discuss the damselfly's natural history, threats to its survival and the potential to reintroduce it to Mountain Lake. While this species was once widespread in the Bay Area, its last known San Francisco population now survives in the Presidio and few other populations remain.

The City of San Carlos Department of Parks and Recreation and the San Mateo County Astronomical Society have open Star Parties twice a� month.
Reasons to AttendIf you have kids interested in space or planets bring them here for a real life view of planets, nebula, star clusters and galaxies.If you are thinking of buying a telescope or want help using a telescope you own, come here to talk with experienced users.If you think you might have an interest in astronomy come and talk to experienced amateur astronomers.
Setup will begin at sunset and observing about one hour after sunset. In the event of inclement weather (rain, clouds, fog or excessive wind) the star party will not to be held. Because each astronomer makes his or her own decision about bringing their telescope, there is no official cancellation notice.
If ou would like help with setting up a telescope or would like to learn about telescopes, come at sunset. If you would just like to see the universe throught a telescope, come at about one or two hours after sunset.

Learn to be a naturalist!�August's skill is Owls and Owl Pellet Dissection. Variations of the monthly skill will be available each week.�
This program is designed for youth ages 8 to 11. Youth must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited to 20 youth with attending adult. Onsite registration is required for this program. It is recommended that you stop by the Naturalist Center (Level 3) a half hour before the program begins in order to register.
